Jules Verne Michel Strogoff Theatre du Chatelet Original French Lithograph 1880

An exceptionally rare original French stone lithograph advertising Michel Strogoff at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Based on Jules Verne’s celebrated 1876 novel, this spectacular theatrical production was personally adapted for the stage by Jules Verne himself, working in collaboration with the renowned French playwright Adolphe d’Ennery. The production premiered on November 17, 1880, and became one of the great theatrical successes of nineteenth-century Paris.

Far from simply lending his name to the production, Jules Verne was actively involved in transforming his adventure novel into an elaborate theatrical spectacle. The production featured hundreds of performers, magnificent costumes, elaborate scenery, and live horses on stage, captivating Parisian audiences.

This beautifully illustrated lithograph depicts a dramatic scene from the production, featuring mounted soldiers, Russian and Tartar characters, and richly decorated costumes. Printed in Paris by A. Marchand using the traditional stone lithographic process.

An extraordinary surviving example of nineteenth-century French theatrical advertising, directly associated with a theatrical work written by Jules Verne himself, making it particularly desirable to collectors of Jules Verne, French literature, and antique theatrical posters.
