Ravello is a historic village perched above Italy’s Amalfi Coast, dating back to the 12th century. One of its famous landmarks is Villa Rufolo, built by a wealthy merchant family in the 1200s. The villa’s medieval architecture blends Greek, Arab, and Moorish influences due to Ravello’s location along Mediterranean trade routes. Villa Rufolo was first mentioned in 1353 in Boccaccio’s Decameron.

Ravello became a popular retreat for artists, musicians, and writers in the late 1800s during the Grand Tour era. Famous visitors included Robert Wagner, who composed part of his Parsifal opera here, as well as Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, and Greta Garbo. Today, Ravello still attracts celebrities seeking privacy on the Amalfi Coast.

The Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT), established in 1919, created posters like this one to promote travel within Italy. This particular poster, featuring Villa Rufolo, was designed by Publio Morbiducci (1889-1963), a noted artist known for his sculptures and designs for Italian currency and the 1936 Olympics.

Ravello – Villa Rufolo, Publio Morbiducci, 1933

Original 1933 Italian travel poster featuring Villa Rufolo in Ravello, designed by Publio Morbiducci and issued by the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT). Ravello, a medieval village set high above the Amalfi Coast, is renowned for its panoramic views and historic architecture. Villa Rufolo, built in the 13th century by a wealthy merchant family, blends Arab, Moorish, and classical influences reflecting Ravello’s position on Mediterranean trade routes. The villa is famously mentioned in Boccaccio’s Decameron (1353).

From the late 19th century, Ravello became a celebrated retreat for artists, writers, and musicians during the era of the Grand Tour. Richard Wagner composed parts of Parsifal here, and later visitors included Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, and Greta Garbo.

Publio Morbiducci (1889–1963), best known as a sculptor and designer, also created striking poster art for ENIT. His works combined classical imagery with modernist design. This example, printed by Calcocromia Novarra, survives in nice condition with light folds and has strong historical significance as part of Italy’s interwar tourism campaign.

    ENCRE MARQUET — Eugène Grasset – 1896

Original stone-lithograph plate printed circa 1896 at Imprimerie Chaix (Paris) for Les Affiches Illustrées. This plate presents Eugène Grasset’s elegant advertising design for Encre Marquet, a French ink manufacturer. Grasset, one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau, was celebrated for his graceful line work, flattened color harmonies, and stylized decorative compositions that drew on medieval and Japanese sources. His poster for Encre Marquet exemplifies this refined approach, transforming a simple commercial product into a work of artistic sophistication.

Les Affiches Illustrées (1896–1899) was one of the earliest journals devoted exclusively to poster art, issued in limited numbers for collectors. Published under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret at the Chaix atelier, each issue contained stone-lithograph reductions of major affiches, printed on fine paper using the same techniques as the large-format originals. These plates offered collectors access to authentic poster art by the leading designers of the Belle Époque in a more practical and collectible format.

Grasset’s Encre Marquet remains an iconic example of French poster design in the 1890s, combining functionality, elegance, and the stylistic innovation that defined Art Nouveau.
