Vintage poster Relax by René Gruau, created for the French shipping company Chargeurs Réunis. This edition is a second printing from the 1970s, mounted on linen and preserved in excellent condition.
René Gruau (1909–2004), born Count Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli della Caminate, was one of the most influential fashion illustrators of the 20th century. His bold lines and elegant compositions appeared in major fashion magazines and advertising campaigns for leading designers. Gruau’s imagery distilled style and sophistication into single striking forms, shaping the visual language of fashion illustration for decades.
Relax is an example of Gruau’s distinctive style applied to travel advertising, combining simplicity with a refined sense of elegance.
Venezia was issued by the Italian State Tourist Office (ENIT) circa 1950 and printed by Pizzi & Pizio, Milano–Roma. The composition uses the distinctive silhouette of a gondola’s prow (ferro) as a frame for a view of St. Mark’s Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio), with its bell and the bronze figures known as the “Moors.”
The poster was produced in offset lithography and reflects the mid-century ENIT approach of combining strong graphic shapes with a single, recognizable landmark to promote Italian destinations.
