CESENATICO – Giovanni Guerrini – 1927 – Original Italian travel poster
Original Italian travel poster designed by Giovanni Guerrini in 1927 promoting Cesenatico, the historic Adriatic resort and fishing port on Italy’s Emilia-Romagna coast, just north of Rimini. Guerrini’s bold and highly graphic composition uses striking color and simplified forms to capture the maritime character of this fashionable Italian seaside destination.
Cesenatico is particularly celebrated for its historic canal harbor, the Porto Canale, whose development is closely associated with drawings and surveys made by Leonardo da Vinci during his visit in 1502. The canal runs directly through the heart of the old town and remains one of Cesenatico’s defining landmarks. During the early 20th century, the traditional fishing port increasingly developed into a popular Adriatic beach resort, making it an ideal subject for the new generation of Italian tourism posters.

Milton Glaser produced several versions of this poster for Campari, utilizing both artistic screen printing (serigraphy) and traditional paper. This 1992 edition is considered rare. The two versions include a signed serigraph on Arches paper and an unsigned version on standard paper; while both employ serigraph printing techniques, they share a similar visual aesthetic.
Milton Glaser, one of the most influential graphic designers of the 20th century, used bold colors, fluid shapes, and timeless imagery. His work included the I ❤ NY logo and the psychedelic Bob Dylan poster. Campari, known for collaborating with renowned artists, continued this tradition with Glaser’s striking advertisement.
Since its founding in 1860, Campari has shaped its visual identity through commissions from artists across styles, from Art Nouveau to modern design. Glaser’s Campari poster, with its vivid colors and stylized composition, reflects the brand’s playful yet sophisticated spirit.
The poster came in two versions: one on standard paper and another on high-quality Arches paper, often used for fine art prints. Glaser hand-signed the Arches edition, making it especially valuable to collectors. This collaboration between an iconic artist and a legendary brand remains a celebrated piece of graphic design and advertising history.
