L’Estampe Moderne: A Pinnacle of Art Nouveau Lithography
Overview:
Published from 1897 to 1899, L’Estampe Moderne was a prestigious subscription series offering 24 monthly installments of original lithographic plates. Each installment included four finely crafted prints, intended to showcase the creativity and elegance of the Art Nouveau movement.
Production and Artists:
The series was printed by the renowned Champenois Imprimerie in Paris, a printer famous for their work with Alphonse Mucha. Each plate bore an embossed Art Nouveau emblem in the bottom-right corner, signaling authenticity. Unlike Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, which reproduced existing posters, L’Estampe Moderne featured entirely original works created specifically for the publication. Notable contributors included Alphonse Mucha, Louis Rhead, and other celebrated artists of the era.

Charming original color lithograph by Firmin Bouisset, published in L’Estampe Moderne in 1899. It depicts a young flower seller holding a bouquet, rendered in Bouisset’s soft, naturalistic Art Nouveau style. Issued as plate no. 20 of the celebrated monthly portfolio L’Estampe Moderne (1897 – 99), printed by Champenois in Paris and distributed by Masson & Piazza. The sheet bears the embossed blindstamp “L’Estampe Moderne / E.M.” in the lower right margin and Bouisset’s printed signature within the image. This is an excellent example from the original issue — clean, fresh color and wide margins, ideal for framing.

A graceful lithograph from L’Estampe Moderne series showing a ballerina backstage, poised delicately en pointe in her white tutu as she awaits her turn to dance. The work captures Henri Boutet’s refined sensitivity to gesture and atmosphere—his reputation as “le peintre de la femme” (the painter of women) is evident in this quiet, expectant moment. Published in 1897 by Imprimerie Champenois in Paris, this print was issued by monthly subscription, four plates delivered by post to collectors throughout Europe. Each carried the embossed L’Estampe Moderne blind stamp and exemplified the high quality of French lithography at the close of the century.
This example is in excellent condition, unlined, with fine color and impression. The one shown is representative; all available editions are identical in design and quality, differing only by printed number and month of issue.
