Original 1930 French travel poster by L. Prieur promoting Veneux-les-Sablons, near Fontainebleau, as a delightful recreational escape from Paris.

Prieur presents an idyllic summer scene along the river, with swimmers and divers enjoying the water, rowers in small boats, and visitors relaxing beneath the trees. Across the river, a bridge and the village provide a picturesque backdrop. The brilliant greens, blues and yellows and simplified forms give the composition the fresh, modern character of French travel advertising of the interwar period.

Veneux-les-Sablons lies at the southern edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, near the confluence of the Seine and Loing. Easily accessible from Paris by train, the area attracted weekend visitors for swimming, boating, walking and excursions through the surrounding countryside and forest.

The poster is a wonderful evocation of the increasingly popular idea of escaping Paris for a day in the country, combining outdoor leisure with the bold color and elegant graphic design of the period.
Printed by Imprimerie Delaporte in Paris, this original lithograph has been professionally backed on linen and remains in excellent condition with beautifully preserved color.

An original stone lithograph by Adolfo Hohenstein, issued as Plate 160 in Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the celebrated monthly series published by Jules Chéret at Imprimerie Chaix, Paris, from 1895 to 1900. The series offered subscribers four numbered plates each month, reproducing the finest poster designs of the Belle Époque in reduced format.

This design was created for the Milan publishing and music house G. Ricordi & C., marking the Centenary of the Discovery. Hohenstein, a leading figure of the Italian Art Nouveau movement, was central to Ricordi’s poster output. His elegant composition, fluid line, and distinctive decorative style make this plate a strong example of his work during his most influential period.
