    René Gruau (1909–2004), born Count Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli della Caminate, was one of the most influential fashion illustrators of the 20th century. His bold lines and elegant compositions appeared in major fashion magazines and advertising campaigns for leading designers. Gruau’s imagery distilled style and sophistication into single striking forms, shaping the visual language of fashion illustration for decades.

The gallery, established by Aimé Maeght, was one of the most important modern art venues in Europe, representing artists such as Miró, Braque, Calder, and Chagall himself.

    This particular poster, also known as Le Oiseau Vert (The Green Bird), showcases Chagall’s hallmark dreamlike imagery—blending vivid colors, floating figures, and symbolic animals.     This vintage poster titled La Danseuse Créole appeared in 1965 to promote the Musée Matisse in Nice. It features an image based on a 1950 cut-out by Henri Matisse. The original artwork, made from gouache-painted paper, was inspired by American dancer Katherine Dunham. Matisse saw her perform in his studio and later created the piece. In 1953, he donated the work to the city of Nice. When the museum opened in 1963, it became part of the permanent collection. Atelier Mourlot in Paris printed the poster as a color lithograph. The Syndicat d’Initiative de Nice issued it with support from the French tourism office. This edition includes Matisse’s printed signature and was produced in limited quantity. The image reflects his late paper cut-out style, with flat shapes and strong color contrast.
