Nice Cote D’Azur by Henri Matisse 1965 Danseuse Creole
This vintage poster titled La Danseuse Créole appeared in 1965 to promote the Musée Matisse in Nice. It features an image based on a 1950 cut-out by Henri Matisse. The original artwork, made from gouache-painted paper, was inspired by American dancer Katherine Dunham. Matisse saw her perform in his studio and later created the piece. In 1953, he donated the work to the city of Nice. When the museum opened in 1963, it became part of the permanent collection. Atelier Mourlot in Paris printed the poster as a color lithograph. The Syndicat d’Initiative de Nice issued it with support from the French tourism office. This edition includes Matisse’s printed signature and was produced in limited quantity. The image reflects his late paper cut-out style, with flat shapes and strong color contrast.
