Nice-Thermal – Berthemont-les-Bains – 1950 – Emmanuel Bellini

This colorful 1950 French travel poster by Emmanuel Bellini promotes Berthemont-les-Bains, the historic thermal spa in the Vésubie Valley of the French Alps, approximately 50 kilometers from Nice. Situated at an altitude of 950 meters, the resort combined mountain scenery and fresh alpine air with the long-established French tradition of thermal cures.

Bellini creates a wonderfully lively composition using loose, expressive forms and brilliant color. A stylized female figure dominates the scene, surrounded by the spa village, mountains, vegetation and Mediterranean imagery. The result captures the optimism and freedom of French travel advertising in the early postwar period.

The poster promotes Berthemont-les-Bains for its sulfurous and silicate-rich thermal waters and treatments for respiratory, rheumatological and dermatological conditions, summarized by the prominent slogan “Santé-Beauté” — Health and Beauty. It also advertises the Hôtel des Bains, restaurant and bar, with the thermal season running from June through September.

Printed in Cannes by Robaudy, this original 1950 lithographic poster has been professionally linen backed and remains in excellent condition with strong, fresh colors.
