COMMUNICATIONS (MERRILL LYNCH) — PETER GEE — 1969

Original color silkscreen print created by Peter Gee in 1969 as part of a Merrill Lynch advertising campaign. The design reflects the visual language of financial information and communications. The image appears to depict an electronic stock market news or quotation board rendered as a photomontage and transformed through Gee’s vivid Pop art color palette. The result is a striking composition suggesting the rapid flow of financial information and activity associated with the trading floor.

Peter Gee (1932–2005) was a British-born artist and graphic designer associated with the Pop art movement in New York. After serving as a graphic designer in the British Army and exhibiting in London and Paris, he moved to New York in 1962 where his distinctive graphic style gained recognition. Gee participated in the Word and Image exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1968 alongside artists such as Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. His silkscreen prints are known for their strong graphic structure, vivid color combinations, and influences drawn from Bauhaus design principles and modernist abstraction.

Gee also taught color theory and design at the School of Visual Arts in New York, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard University. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto.
