Aquarium du Trocadero – Raoul Eric Castel – Circa 1950

Original French advertising poster created circa 1950 by Raoul Eric Castel (1915–1997), known professionally as ERIC, promoting the historic Aquarium du Trocadero in Paris.

This striking composition depicts an underwater scene featuring a large predatory fish surrounded by colorful aquatic plants, smaller tropical fish, and rising bubbles. The vivid greens, yellows, blues, and reds contrast dramatically against the black background, creating an imaginative and visually compelling example of mid-century French poster design.

Raoul Eric Castel was a French illustrator and advertising artist whose work included posters for Air France, Philips, and the French national railway. His distinctive use of color and imaginative compositions made his designs particularly memorable.

The Aquarium du Trocadero was established in 1878 for the Paris Universal Exposition and later modernized in the 1930s. Located in the Jardins du Palais de Chaillot, directly across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower, it became one of Paris’s popular attractions. The aquarium survives today as the Aquarium de Paris, which reopened in its modern form in 2006.

Printed in Paris by Maron-Esperonnier, this original lithograph has been professionally mounted on linen and remains in excellent condition.
