Imola Grand Prix – San Marino 1982, Michael Turner Poster
Imola Grand Prix – San Marino 1982 Poster by Michael Turner
This is an original poster for the 2º Gran Premio di San Marino, held in 1982 at the legendary Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola. Although officially named for the nearby Republic of San Marino, the race was staged at Imola, one of Formula 1’s most iconic circuits and closely associated with Ferrari.
The artwork is by Michael Turner, the renowned British motorsport illustrator celebrated from the 1960s through the 1980s for his dramatic depictions of Formula 1 and racing cars. Printed by Polografici, Bologna using offset lithography, the poster has been professionally mounted on linen for preservation.
The 1982 San Marino Grand Prix remains one of the most famous and controversial races in F1 history. Due to a political boycott, only 14 cars took the start, and the battle came down to the two Ferraris of Didier Pironi and Gilles Villeneuve. After apparent team orders to slow down, Villeneuve believed positions were fixed, but Pironi overtook in the closing laps to seize victory. Villeneuve, furious at what he considered a betrayal, vowed never to speak to Pironi again — a vow cut short by his tragic fatal accident just two weeks later at Zolder. Pironi’s win at Imola, with Villeneuve second and Michele Alboreto (Tyrrell-Ford) third, became one of the defining moments of the 1982 season, adding lasting historical weight to this poster.
