L’ITALIE PAR ST GOTTHARD – HUGO D’ALESI – c1900
Original stone lithograph poster by Hugo D’Alesi promoting travel to Italy via the St. Gotthard railway route. Issued circa 1900, the poster was printed in Paris by Ateliers Hugo D’Alesi for the Chemins de Fer. The composition presents a view toward Italy with Mount Vesuvius shown active in the distance. A female figure dressed in period costume stands in the foreground, while surrounding vignettes depict views of the lakes of the Swiss Alps. D’Alesi produced numerous railway posters during this period, later working extensively for PLM and creating large-scale decorative murals for train stations. This example measures 30 x 41.5 inches and has been professionally mounted on linen. It is in excellent “A” condition.

WITH FINAL DESTINATION NAPLES. THIS IS QUITE INTERESTING AS THE VOLCANO MT VESUVIOUS IS ACTIVE IN THE DISTANCE. THE LADY IS DRESSED IN THE COSTUME OF THE DAY. THE VIGNETTES ARE VIEWS OF THE LAKES IN THE SWISS ALPES. HUGO D’ALESI WAS A MASTER ARTIST WHO DID A LARGE BODY OF WORKS FOR THE CHEMINS DE FER AND LATER PLM INCLUDING MURALES AT TRAIN STATIONS. GREAT STUFF.
