Chamonix–Strasbourg was created by Roger Broders in 1926 for the PLM (Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée) railway company to promote travel between the French Alps and Alsace. The design features two women in the traditional dress of their respective regions — the wide-brimmed bow headdress of Strasbourg and the alpine attire of Chamonix — standing against a backdrop that links snow-covered peaks to the architectural landmarks of eastern France.

Broders, one of France’s most celebrated travel poster artists, was known for his bold compositions, clear lines, and rich color palettes. This work reflects his signature style of pairing stylized landscapes with strong graphic design to capture the romance of rail travel in the interwar period.

Printed in Paris by Lucien Serre using lithography, this large-format poster has been mounted on linen for preservation and is in excellent “A” condition.

Marc Chagall painted the ceiling of the Paris Opera, officially known as the Palais Garnier, in 1963. His work replaced the original design by Jules-Eugène Lenepveu and was unveiled in 1964. The mural spans 2,400 square feet and celebrates famous composers like Mozart, Wagner, and Debussy. Using vivid colors and dreamlike imagery, Chagall created a striking contrast with the opera’s classical architecture. Initially, some critics felt it clashed with the historic setting, but it later became a beloved feature of the opera house.

In 1969, Chagall designed a travel poster for Air France featuring Romeo and Juliet. The artwork shows the lovers floating in an embrace above a colorful landscape, blending fantasy and romance. His deep blues, reds, and yellows create a dreamlike atmosphere, reflecting France’s cultural richness. Today, this poster remains one of the most well-known travel images linked to his work.

About the Artist: Susan Stewart, an American artist currently residing on Cape Cod. She has traversed a diverse artistic journey. A former soloist with the Joffrey Ballet in New York City from 1977 to 1983. She later pursued studies at the Ecole Superieure d’art Annecy Alpes in the city of Annecy, France. Then she transitioned from murals, sign painting and Poster Designer to Fine Art. Returning to the United States after 30 years in France, she now calls Cape Cod home.
Susan’s paintings serve as a canvas to transform and reinterpret her most poignant memories. Focused on achieving harmony between color, movement, shape, and rhythm, her work often draws from music, society, and nature. Her pieces encourage viewers to reflect on the complexities of human existence, blending elements of the past into dreamlike, fabricated memories. Beyond the visual realm, Susan’s artistic goal is to encapsulate these stories. The artist creates modified reminders of her life’s experiences and souvenirs. With her direct, primitive freshness and use of Fauvist color, Susan wants to create a world that “enhances the life” of others. Often bringing the spectatorsto ask themselves questions around the events occurring in the painting. This involves the viewer mentally as well as visually.
The Artists approach involves rearranging “old” memories to craft new narratives. Drawing inspiration from her past, Susan explores specific individuals and moments. Often reinterpreting her own photos to suit a new vision. Her work integrates a thoughtful study of art history. Susan is influenced by dance, literature, music, and painting, with artists like Peter Doig, Matthew Wong, and David Hockney serving as inspiration.
Classified within the realm of Magic Realism, Susan has showcased her work online. Ms Stewart has been selling through her personal site and galleries throughout Europe. She has since arriving in the States in 2019 exhibited at the Cape Cod Museum. She also has exhibited at the Sarasota Art Center in Florida, PAAM art museum in Provincetown and The Commons in Provincetown
