Castellane Champagne by Mario 1920/80
Castellane celebrated all their famous posters in 1980 and printed them in a 16×24 inch format. Poster in excellent condition
This poster was printed in 1980 by the Champagne house Castellane to celebrate their long history of advertising design. As part of this series, Castellane issued several of their most famous posters in a uniform 16 x 24 inch format. The present example features artwork by Alain Gauthier, a French affichiste who studied under the renowned poster artist Paul Colin. Printed by Castellane as an authorized edition, it has been professionally preserved and remains in excellent condition.

In this elegant 1904 poster for the French ballet Cigale, artist Maurice Leloir captures the frigid fate of one of the story’s central figures with remarkable sensitivity. The ballet, written by Henri Cain and set to music by the celebrated composer Jules Massenet, was performed at the Théâtre de l’Opéra-Comique in Paris. Leloir’s lithograph was printed by Imp. Devambez, one of the foremost Parisian art printers of the early 20th century. The poster announced the première of Massenet’s Cigale—a divertissement-ballet evoking the poetic melancholy and grace typical of fin-de-siècle French theater.

Confetti by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec for Les Affiches Étrangères, Chaix Imprimerie, 1897 (Stone Lithograph)
Jules Chéret created Les Affiches Étrangères at the Chaix Imprimerie to showcase international poster artists. His goal was to offer the public a book featuring 65 color plates and numerous black-and-white illustrations. The poster-collecting craze that began in France in 1895 increased demand for this collection. As a result, the book highlighted famous posters from artists outside France. Each artist approved their plate, and Chaix Imprimerie produced them using stone lithography in 1897. The collection includes works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Chéret, and others. This lithograph is an opportunity to own an original piece created during Lautrec’s lifetime with his consent. Today, museums worldwide feature this work.
Toulouse-Lautrec designed the Confetti poster in 1894 as a lively advertisement for Palais de la Nouveauté, a Parisian company selling confetti. During that time, confetti was a popular item for carnival season and festive events.
This plate appears in Les Affiches Étrangères because, although Lautrec was a French artist, he designed the poster for a London-based company that produced confetti for festivals.
Original large-format Italian advertising poster for the Contratto wine and aperitif house in Canelli, designed by Mario Gros and printed in 1938 by Gros-Monti & Cie., Torino. The text reads “G. Contratto Canelli / Tonic / Aperitivo Digestivo,” promoting Contratto’s tonic and digestif apéritif. Printed in a very large 55 x 78 in format for public display, this is an original 1938 lithographic poster. It has been professionally mounted on linen and is in excellent condition, with a clean image and strong overall appearance.

Original German advertising poster for Crüwell Tabak, c. 1930s. The design shows a nighttime view of the Taj Mahal, linking the tobacco brand with imagery of the East. The text reads Gebr. Crüwell Spezialfabrik für Rauchtabak Gegr. 1717 Bielefeld (“Crüwell Brothers, Special Factory for Smoking Tobacco, Established 1717, Bielefeld”).
Crüwell was a long-established German tobacco manufacturer with origins in the 18th century. By the early 20th century the company issued a number of decorative posters and point-of-purchase displays to promote its pipe tobacco products. This example was printed on heavy board for shop display rather than wall posting, and is smaller in scale than typical lithographic advertising posters.
