Cirage Jaquot by Lucien Lefevre FOR LES AFFICHES ILLUSTREES 1896 Stone Litho
$ 275CIRAGE JACQUOT — Lefèvre
Original stone-lithograph plate printed circa 1896 at Imprimerie Chaix (Paris) for Les Affiches Illustrées. This reduced-format lithograph reproduces Lefèvre’s colorful advertising poster for Cirage Jacquot, a French shoe polish brand whose whimsical marketing campaigns were widely recognized in the late 19th century. The poster, with its bold typography and cheerful imagery, reflects the era’s fascination with turning everyday products into art through the medium of the illustrated affiche.
Les Affiches Illustrées (1896–1899) was among the earliest publications dedicated to poster art, issued in limited numbers to collectors. Produced under the direction of Jules Chéret at the Chaix workshop, each plate was a carefully executed lithographic reduction of a major contemporary poster. These editions, printed on fine paper with the same techniques as the full-size affiches, allowed subscribers to collect authentic works by leading artists of the Belle Époque in a smaller, more practical format.
The Cirage Jacquot design is a fine example of the commercial poster’s role in shaping modern visual culture. With its lively character and clear branding, it demonstrates how advertising lithography blended humor, style, and function—qualities that made such works both effective marketing tools and enduring collectibles.
