LU Biscuits – René Gruau – Vintage French Cookie Poster Original
Original French advertising poster for the celebrated LU biscuit company, designed by René Gruau. Bringing the elegance of Parisian fashion illustration to an everyday French product, Gruau depicts a stylish woman with the effortless sophistication that made his work immediately recognizable.
René Gruau (1909–2004) was one of the most influential fashion illustrators and advertising artists of the 20th century. Closely associated with the world of haute couture, he became particularly celebrated for his long collaboration with Christian Dior and also created work for many of the leading fashion and luxury houses of his era. His distinctive style relied on elegant, sweeping lines, simplified forms and bold areas of color, often conveying a sense of glamour with remarkably few visual elements.
For LU, Gruau applied the same sophisticated visual language normally associated with couture and luxury goods. Rather than simply illustrating the product, he transformed the advertisement into a fashionable image in its own right. The elegantly dressed woman gives the familiar French biscuit brand an unmistakably chic, Parisian character and makes the poster a particularly appealing example of Gruau’s commercial work outside the fashion world.
Founded in Nantes in the 19th century, LU became one of France’s most recognizable biscuit manufacturers, famous for products including the Petit-Beurre. The company’s long tradition of commissioning accomplished artists and designers resulted in some exceptionally decorative French advertising.
